The Bike And No Shoei Helmet

Thursday, June 25th, 2009
motorcycle helmet

You have dreamed about this moment for years and worked so hard on saving your last pennies. You have seen hundreds of bikes, and been to the dealer at least 30 times. The choice was hard and it has been a long road. But then it pays off. You are buying your first bike today. You can’t wait to take it for a ride.

However, because of all the excitement, you forgot to look at the helmets in the case next to your new bike. It could only have been the excitement of the day that would have allowed you to miss the spectacular design of the Shoie helmet. Instead, you grabbed the first helmet you saw next to the register. But what does it really matter right? The only thing it needs to do is make sure your head does not break when, and even if you’re in an accident.

There she is looking at you with those beautiful streamlined headlights and her sexy seat. You turn the key and start her up. The only thing on your mind now is the open road. And as luck has it, it is a beautiful day for riding. About 5 min in to the ride you start feeling uncomfortable. Your helmet keeps fogging up and it feels like someone is trying to rip your head of your shoulders. You seem to remember something mentioned at the shop about a Shoie, but you weren’t really listening, only looking ahead at the ride to come. You decide that before it becomes a real problem you have to go back and talk to the guys at the bike shop.

shoei helmetsWhen you reach the shop one of the guys is standing outside. Even before you have a change to say anything the guy looks at your helmet and say’s “You should have grabbed a Shoei helmet.” The two of you go in to talk about the most important purchase you will make all day.

This is a story right out of experience. This is not something unheard of, and it actually happens a lot. When it comes to helmets there is a lot of choice out there. And a lot of first time riders just don’t know what to look for. Thankfully, Shoei helmets has done the thinking for you. Since the fifties, this company has been hard at work making the perfect helmets. Although the company started making construction helmets in 1954, they have grown in to the best motorcycle helmet makers in the business. These helmets that shoei presents to you are not only very cool to look at, but are also tested in many different ways. So the next time you go out for a ride and your visor is fogging up, you should really think about going to see your motorcycle shop to test one of the best helmets out there today. You will be surprised at the difference a good helmet will make.

Safe Motorcycle Accessories

Wednesday, June 24th, 2009
As a responsible motorcycle rider, or as a new rider who would like to become one, there are obviously many safety concerns you must ponder before you go on that first rise of the season. As the motorist on a bike, it is your responsibility to stay as safe as possible. But this means more than just knowing how to ride, and making sure you have the proper licensure. It also means having the correct equipment that will keep you safe under any conditions, be it bad weather, cold, or being involved in an accident. Now that riding season is upon us again, it’s time to make sure that you are completely prepared to ride, which means having all of the proper motorcycle accessories.motorcycles accessories

Motorcycle accessories are necessary both to keep you comfortable on the road, and to keep you safe as you’re riding. This rundown will go from the top down, and start with your helmet. It is of course, important for you to wear a helmet. Even if you live in one of the few states that doesn’t legally require one, it is taking your life in your hands to ride without.

The helmet serves several essential functions. First, it protects your face from weather and road kick up. Secondly, it is designed to help prevent cuts and broken bones on your face and head should you fall from your bike. Most importantly, it is designed to cushion any blows you may take to the head, helping to prevent permanent or fatal brain damage.

motorcycle jacketsAs a rider, your second most important motorcycle accessory is your motorcycle jacket. If you don’t ride, you might think that the jacket’s only function is to be a cool status symbol. However, the jacket actually provides several important safety and comfort functions to the rider. In the summer, a good leather motorcycle jacket helps to protect your skin from sun damage. With opened vents, it’s also a great way to keep yourself cool as you’re riding. In the winter, these vents can be closed to keep the rider nice and warm. The jacket is also an essential part of rider safety. Should you be involved in an accident, your jacket is designed not to rip or tear, keeping your upper body protected from harm.

Other important motorcycle accessories are also designed to keep you both comfortable and safe. Both gloves and riding pants will help to enhance your riding experience, and will keep you out on the road longer. But if you’re involved in an accident, they’re also essential to protecting that part of your body. Motorcycle boots are also an important part of a rider’s gear, as they help you to lock into the foot pedals.

When you’re a serious rider, and want to stay safe, it pays to know what motorcycle accessories you need. Always make sure to be completely prepared before you head out on the road so that you can stay as safe as possible.

Motorcycles In The Military

Tuesday, June 23rd, 2009
he other day, I took the chance to watch again that fantastic movie ‘The Great Escape’. As I watched Bud Ekins take the place of Steve McQueen, to jump the wire fence on his Triumph, I began to wonder about the role of the motorcycle during wartime, so I did a little reading and was surprised to find that motorcycles have played a huge part in military history. Being able to go where other vehicles couldn’t, they became the modern day horses, with one great advantage; some bikes, such as the Enfield ‘Flying Flea’ or ‘Airborne’ as it was also known, could be military motorcycleparachuted from an aeroplane along with troops.

Royal Enfield also supplied motorbikes to the British Armed Forces in World War 1, with machine gun-carrying combinations and stretcher-bearing motorcycles being made on demand. The company even won a contract to supply motorbikes to the Russians, and when most able bodied men were at war in Europe, a police force made up of women was issued with 600cc motorcycles.

The Germans weren’t slow in seeing the practicality of using two wheeled transport. BMW motorcycles were to prove invaluable in North Africa during World War 2. Not having a chain that could clog with sand, they were so successful that Harley-Davidson were requested by the US military to copy the machine, which they duly did and produced the Harley-Davidson XA. With the German war machine insatiable for motorcycles, BMW flourished during the war years.

military motorcycle loan

The American Army have been using motorcycles since 1913, with a third of all Harley-Davidson machines being produced for the military in 1917. In the Second World War the company produced 30,000 bikes for the Russians and also built machines for the Canadians. A total of 90,000 motorcycles were produced during the conflict. The Indian Motorcycle Company also produced machines such as the ‘Scout’ and ‘Chief’ during the war years, but weren’t able to replace Harley Davidson as the motorcycle of choice.

In Britain, the First World War provided work for the Triumph factory as production was concentrated on the war effort. More than 30,000 motorcycles, including the ‘Model H Roadster’ were turned over to the military. In World War 2, the Triumph factory was laid to waste by German bombs, along with most of Coventry, so production moved to a site near Meriden, also in the West Midlands area of England. Apart from building some 50,000 motorbikes during the war, Triumph also produced aircraft components.

In 1950, the North Koreans, backed by China, were able to deploy a ‘Motorcycle Reconnaissance’ unit equipped with home produced bikes. Vietnam also saw the use of the military motorcycle, with ‘Special Forces’ employing motorbikes during that ill-fated conflict. In 1988, Vietnam Veterans took to the streets of Washington D.C. to create a two-wheeled convoy known as ‘Rolling Thunder’, in order to raise awareness of the suffering of the soldiers who did not return from the war. This has developed into an annual pilgrimage to the ‘Vietnam Veterans Memorial’.

‘Operation Desert Storm’ in 1991 again saw the deployment of motorcycles, and more recently, the manoeuvrability of two-wheeled transport proved invaluable in Afghanistan and Iraq. When the road ends, the motorcycle keeps on going. When the road doesn’t end, the speed of a motorcycle is unchallenged. Accessibility and versatility have been key words associated with the role of military motorcycles since the outset.

Now back to Steve McQueen, who was frowned upon by his bosses at the studio for spilling the beans about his stunt double, during ‘The Johnny Carson Show’. When Johnny congratulated Steve on the motorcycle jump, Steve didn’t hesitate in putting the record straight. It wasn’t that Steve McQueen couldn’t ride a bike, quite the contrary. In the scenes before the jump, he rode his own bike as Virgil Hilts, but the German riders couldn’t keep pace with him, so wearing a German uniform, he took the role of a pursuing German, and through the magic of film editing, chased himself. So the next time you get the chance to see ‘The Great Escape’, look out for Steve McQueen chasing Steve McQueen. The motorcycle chase was actually McQueen’s idea. The original script had Virgil Hilts attempting to escape by train, but when McQueen said to his director ‘Hey John, I’ve got an idea that will put more juice into this’, a small piece of movie and motorcycle history was born.

new motor bikes

The main reason of the success of motor bikes in India is their four stroke engine which is extremely fuel efficient. Out of the total market for two wheelers in the country, a whopping 8% is captured by this heart winning machine.

There are number of players capturing the bike market today. Hero in collaboration with Honda, TVS, Yamaha, Suzuki, the good old Royal Enfield and even the earlier scooter manufacturers like LML and Bajaj Auto are providing excellent fodder to the average bike lover. Even though all of them are providing a bike to suit everybody’s needs, let us do a quick check on what is new on the shelves of the motor bike bazaar in the country!

Royal Enfield
Although the Royal Enfield Company has been giving the most sought after motor bikes in the name of Bullet since a long time, the latest in there kitty is the new Bullet Machismo 500. It is an awesome bike powered by a 500cc four stroke air cooled engine and a comfortable yet elegant design. The only thing that you can think of while riding this beauty is speed as you go va va vrooooooom!!

Hero Honda
Hero Honda has come up with quite a few new and amazing models. The Hero Honda Karizma, Hero Honda Splendor NXG, Hero Honda CBZ X-Treme and the Hero Honda Hunk are the new names that can steal your heart.

While the Karizma is good for its 223cc single cylinder, air cooled, four stroke engine which produces optimum power of 17bhp at 7000rpm and its beefy ‘VFR 800’ kind of looks, the Splendour NXG gives stylish new looks and a high performance engine. While the original CBZ won the entire nation’s and particularly the youth’s hearts over, the CBZ extreme comes with features like more power, self start and good design attributes like a powerful windscreen.

TVS
TVS has been constantly updating its technology in the biking segment and has latest come out with TVS Apache Fi 160, which is a bike custom made for racing freaks and speed lovers. The design is sporty and flashy plus has been made keeping in mind the comfort of the rider during a speedy ride. A 160cc four stroke engine and a five speed transmission is all that you need next for a high flying experience.

yamaha

Yamaha
Since the good old days of the popular Yamaha Crux, to the latest sizzling YZF series, Yamaha seems to be the first choice of everybody when it comes to some real biking. After the Enticer, Gladiator and Libero, Yamaha has now decided to woo the Indian race biker’s heart by launching Yamaha YZF R1, YZF- R15, the MT 01 and even the Yamaha FZ 150cc.

While the R1 and R15 attract you with there killer looks and a high performing engine, you will love the shear power and speed of the MT 01. It is a 1670cc, high speed bike which will win your sights and hearts with its handsome looks.

When you check out for the latest in the bike world, what you choose for yourself is rather a personal choice. However, if speed and looks is what you want primarily from your motor bike, we have told you pretty much where to look at!

The Fastest Motorbikes In The World

Saturday, June 20th, 2009
motorcycles for sale

The beliefs behind the Superbike category, which was created half-way through the 1970s, was to race bikes that were very powerful but were in any case similar to production models on sale to the general public. The possibility for the general public to identify themselves with the bikes in this championship that were so close to production models has been the basis for the success of the Superbike category. These are some of the most powerful and fastest Superbikes available in the market ranked by its maximum speed:

Suzuki GSX1300R (Hayabusa)
Ah yes, the fastest motorbike is Suzuki Hayabusa GSX1300R. It is also known worldwide as Hayabusa. This speedy bike was introduced in the year 1999 by Suzuki. This name is a Japanese term for the Peregrine Falcon, which is known for its speed. The fastest motorbike before the Hayabusa was invented is the Super Blackbird. This also happens to be the name of the previously fastest production motorcycle. Makes you think doesn’t it?

Yamaha YZF – R1
Introduced in 1998, this machine brought the sector nearer to a true racing motorbike. Its 1000cc engine powers the bike up to 176mph. Yamaha launched the YZF-R1 after redesigning the Genesis engine to offset the crankshaft, gearbox input and output shafts and this compacting of the engine yielded a huge dividend in that the total engine length was now very short. The launch model Yamaha YZF-R1 was available in white/red or blue this bike has a compression ratio of 11.8:1.

MV Agusta F4 1000R
Released in 2006, this bike which could whizz you up to 185mph in rapid time set a world record at Bonneville Salt Flats and won the title of the ‘Fastest Production Class 1000cc’. The F4 engine is a liquid cooled inline four cylinder (4 strokes) with two overhead camshafts (DOHC), 16 radial valves, electronic multi point injection, induction discharge electronic ignition and following capacity variants: 749.5, 998 and 1,078 cc.

y2k turbine superbikeMTT Turbine Superbike Y2KCreated by Ted McIntyre of Marine Turbine Technologies Inc, this bike is only the world’s second wheel driven motorcycle powered by a turbine engine, and doesn’t it move; 227mph to be precise. It has a Rolls Royce Allison 250 series engine and is recognized by Guinness World Records as the “Most powerful production motorcycle” and the “Most expensive production motorcycle. Riding the motorcycle is said to be somewhat tricky due to the inherent throttle lag in the engine, acceleration when letting off the throttle, and extreme length and with a price tag of US$150,000.

Kawasaki Ninja ZX-14
Kawasaki Ninja ZX-14, known as the ZZR1400 in Europe and Japan, is a hyper sport motorcycle manufactured by Kawasaki Heavy Industries and is currently their most powerful sport bike this is Kawasaki’s flagship model in the Sport bike sector. It was introduced at the Tokyo 2005 show and released for the 2006 model year as a replacement for the ZX-12R. The Ninja ZX-14 is capable of accelerating from 0–60 mph in 2.5 seconds. The top speed is electronically limited to 186 mph (299 km/h).

Honda CBR 1100XX Super Blackbird
Production of the Blackbird began in 1996 and halted in late 2007. The Blackbird gave high performance and touring comfort. Honda CBR1100XX Blackbird was the world’s fastest production motorcycle when launched. At 178mph this bike won the title of ‘The World’s Fastest Production Bike’, stealing the glory from Kawasaki. Some wag once said that the Blackbird cut through the air like a surgeon’s scalpel and I can see where that analogy came from. To my eyes, this bike is just beautiful.

Ducati 1098s
The Ducati 1098 was a super bike manufactured by the Italian motorcycle manufacturer Ducati for 2 years in 2007 and 2008. It was offered as the 1098, 1098S, and 1098R. 160 horsepower and 169mph apart, this is one sexy bike. The high tail section gives the impression of speed, even when the bike is standing still. The whole bike only weighs 173kg, giving the highest torque to weight ratio of any production sport bike ever.

BMW K 1200 S
On 25 September 2004, BMW globally launched a radically redesigned K Series motorcycle, the K 1200 S, with a top speed of 167mph, 0-60 mph in 2.8 seconds, containing an all new in-line four-cylinder, liquid-cooled engine featuring 123 kW (165 hp). The K 1200 S was primarily designed as a Super Sport motorcycle, albeit larger and heavier than the closest Japanese competitors. Recently, a K 1200 S set a land speed record for production bikes in its class at the Bonneville Salt Flats, exceeding 174 mph (280 km/h).

Aprilia RSV1000R
The Aprilia RSV 1000 R is a super bike motorcycle manufactured by Aprilia from 2004 through 2008. Along with the bike’s redesign Aprilia renamed the RSV from RSV Mille to RSV 1000 R. It is offered in three versions: RSV 1000 R (while the “R” designation on the RSV Mille signified the higher spec version) is the standard version, the higher spec version is the RSV 1000 R Factory, and Aprilia made a limited edition version called RSV 1000 R Nera.
