If you live in a house with a garage, then storing and protecting your motorcycle is an easy task to do. By storing it in the garage, you protect it mainly from weather damage. But what if you live in an apartment complex with no garage or a house with no garage? Fortunately you still have a choice when it comes to storing your motorcycle. Consider using a motorcycle cover for protection against the weather.

The first thing you need to realize about motorcycle covers is that not all covers are made the same. Most riders believe that you can go to your local retail store, buy a cheap motorcycle cover, and expect it to do and act the same as a cover you would by at a motorcycle shop. The truth of the matter is- you get what you pay for. In other words, if you pay for a cheap cover, then you get cheap quality and a cover that won’t last very long at all. However if you put the money into a good motorcycle cover, then chances are it will last you a long while.

Cheap motorcycle covers that you get from your local retail store are not much more than a plastic, royal blue, tarp cover. This type of cover will tie at the bottom of the bike with elastic hooks. A high-quality cover is custom fit to your motorcycle so it fits snuggly around the bike to protect it from weather and flying debris.

A lot of motorcycle covers are made to be resistant to water, as well as to repel water or to have UV protection to prevent the harmful rays from damaging the paint job on your motorcycle. However motorcycle covers are not 100% resistant to water for the simple fact that the cover needs to be able to breathe and to get rid of any moisture that may be under the cover. This prevents the bike from getting any rust and rot. The exterior of the motorcycle cover will keep water away while the interior of the cover lets the moisture escape to keep your bike dry.
motorbike coversThe sun’s UV rays can damage any part of your motorcycle from your paint job to your leather seats to your hoses- the sun can even damage your leather gloves if you ride hard and ride every day. Motorcycle covers can protect against all of that. The cover can also keep your seat cool from the summer sun.

Not only does a cover protect again the sun’s rays and rain, but it can also protect again the snow and ice, bird feces, tree sap, tree branches that may fall, and may even protect your tires against a stray dog that decides to use the bathroom on your tires.

So what type of cover do you need to get? There are several companies that make a heavy-duty cover for your motorcycle. These types of covers may come with vents, heat shields, and a surface that is waterproof. This cover is very heavy and durable and may come with locked hems that will allow you to protect your motorcycle.

If you are a travelling motorcyclist, you can find covers that are still durable but not as heavy duty. These types of covers come with a bag in which the cover can be stored. Other types of covers are half-covers, bikini tops, or shades that are made just for the summertime. Covers also protect your motorcycle from potential thieves as they can’t see what is under the cover.

Pricing for covers are relatively reasonable, ranging anywhere from forty to eighty dollars, but by putting the money into a motorcycle cover, your bike will have years of protection and will look as good as new for as long as you have your cover.

This road trip will surely entice every motorcyclist all over the United States, wherever they are coming from. The first town you will encounter from the Alaska Highway is Tok where you can camp or lodge in a comfortable hotel for a good night’s rest before continuing your excursion the following day.

Carry on with your motorcycle road trip through Alaska by making your way to Valdez. Take the Richardson Highway, Alaska’s first highway. The scenic highway is absolutely made for the road trip enthusiast as it is full of twists and turns, a mountain pass, elevation gains, waterfalls and glaciers as you travel along Wrangell-St. Elias and the Chugach Mountains. motorcycle seatSome riders like to travel alone, and if you can cope with the solitude, this has many advantages. You decide the route, the duration of the tour and you get out of bed when you please, be it early or late. If you’re heading down the motorway in France, see the sign for Spain and think ‘I’ll have some of that’, there’s no problem, you just do it. This once happened to me by the way; I ended up in Spain without really meaning to, and had a great time. On the other side of the coin, it can be a problem when things go wrong. A breakdown is always a headache, but if you’re alone it can prove very troublesome, especially if you have to leave your bike unattended. Another issue is illness; no one plans to be sick, but it can happen. Being sick is bad; being sick and alone in a foreign country is worse. Which brings us on to insurance; whether you are travelling alone or in a group, do the sensible thing, and make sure both you and your bike are covered.

Most people will be riding with a group, so there are a few things to consider at the planning stage. It is imperative that the route is decided before the start of the tour. Talk to each other and agree exactly where you are going, how many hours a day you will ride and how often you will stop. Do you have both fast and slow riders in your group? If you intend to stick together, you will need to reach a compromise, but don’t try and make slow riders go faster; that’s a sure fire recipe for trouble. Do your homework and know exactly where you are going to end each day, and where you will be sleeping, whether it be in a city hotel or a campsite. If you are staying in a city hotel, it could be a wise move to select one that has private, secure parking. Even if nothing happens to your bike parked on the street, you could spend a sleepless night worrying about it. A well organised, group tour can be a memorable occasion, but skimp on the planning and it may all end in tears.

harley seatsWhen riding in a group, it’s your job to keep an eye on the bike in front of you, whilst occasionally checking the one behind. If you can, it’s a good idea to have communication between the lead and last bike, that way, if anything happens, the trail bike can contact the lead rider immediately. However, it’s important to keep a reasonable distance between bikes. Assuming that you’re going to travel within the specified speed limits, there are going to be other road users who will want to overtake. If you’re bunched up, an overtaking vehicle can cause serious problems if you have effectively created one elongated vehicle.

If you want to go on a motorcycle tour, can’t find anyone to go with and don’t fancy going it alone, an organised motorcycle tour with a reputable motorcycle tour company could be the answer. Gone are the worries of sourcing and booking accommodation, planning routes and finding places of interest. A good company will generally have a back up vehicle available to carry your luggage, along with other essentials such as water and first aid kit. They will meet you at a designated point; from there on, you hand over your luggage and enjoy the ride. All the hotels will have been pre-booked and places of interest checked out. Of course, it costs a little extra to do it this way, but it’s well worth it. You can so easily sail past an amazing place that lies a few short miles from the well worn path. A prime example of this is the Spanish Motorcycle Museum, which sits at the edge of the village of Hervas, a place no one would ever pass through to go anywhere. Many of the gems to be found on tour are off the beaten track, but hopefully, your tour operator will have researched the area and discovered them for you. The friendships forged on this type of tours can last a lifetime.

Whether you are going alone, with a group or on an organised tour, ride safely and sensibly and enjoy yourself. Look after your fellow riders, and they will in turn, take care of you. Once bitten by the touring bug, it’s very difficult to leave it alone, so here’s to many years of happy touring.

Gel seat pads VS. Airhawk - Motorcycle Riders Club of America

Has anyone out there had good success with gel pad seat cushions or Airhawk seat cushions? I get NUMBUTT after about 100 miles and start squirming around trying to get my let from going numb.

Seat: The stock seat has forward lean angle. I ordered the DP Comfort seat (just to be clear… this is a foam seat, no gel). Though it was better, there was still more forward lean than I liked.

Extra Motorcycle: ‘06 675 Track Tool. I have the gel seat on my street bike and the stock seat on my track bike. The gel seat is great, unless you live in a really hot climate.

yamaha 250Through all the influx of a number of models of bikes with even more difficult names to remember, one thing is for sure- you are not going to forget this bike very easily- If not for anything else, then definitely for it’s off beat looks. People have called this motor bike goggle eyed; fly eyed, eagle eyed and what not. You can decide on your own name for the design though what you will instantly realize the overall riding comfort that the bike provides.

Distinctive Looks

You will not remember this bike for the weird cuts and curves in its body but for the headlights strikingly resembling the eyes of a fly. That combined with a slim and stylish body make give this bike a very futuristic and hip appeal.

The bike is designed so not just for the sake of more international looks but also for the physical convenience of the rider. The tank is shaped so as to easily accommodate the rider’s knees in its recesses while the seat is large and padded enough for a comfortable ride. The bike comes in a range of colors to choose from and has a rich finish to it.

Specifications

The Yamaha Fazer has a four stroke, two valve engine that is quite environment friendly due to its adherence to Indian 2005 emission norms and technology to ensure that even the exhaust gases that it emits are cleaned within the silencer. The displacement is of 125cc and the compression ratio is 10:1. The SOHC engine is quite silent and gives quite a bit of reduced noise.
yamaha 600Through this bike, Yamaha also employs its signature Yamaha Throttle Position Sensor or YTPS system. This system not only controls or manages the inflow of fuel to the engine sensing the RPM but also according to the throttle position. In simple language, this system ensures a much better fuel efficiency. The carburetor of the bike is equipped to observe increased cylinder activity and it retaliates by automatically adjusting to it ensuring a smoother, calmer ride.

You are obviously going to miss the fifth gear that is not provided in this bike while it is being offered by others in the competition. However, considering that the bike does not ask you to burn a whole in your pocket and pay and still gives a very good performance, you can compromise a bit on that.

The absence of disk brakes also hurts a little bit as the bike provides Drum brakes at both the front and rear tyres. The wheelbase is 1,300mm and the minimum ground clearance required is 160mm. the fuel tank capacity is of 13 liters and the bike as all other Yamaha models gives a good average.

Who Invented The Motorcycle

motorcycle partsGood question, but I have to ask you one; gas or steam? No, that’s not what my Dental Hygienist asks me before she sets to work cleaning my gnashers. You see Gottlieb Daimler invented the first gas powered motorcycle in 1885, when an engine created by Nicolaus August Otto was attached to a wooden bicycle. Just to clarify things here; ‘gas’ is not a reference to gasoline, but fuel in a gaseous state rather than liquefied. As two extra wheels were used on this bike as stabilizers, the more pedantic amongst you will disqualify this vehicle as being a four-wheeler, but let’s be fair; he didn’t have a lot to go on did he?

So that’s it then. Germany takes the glory; Daimler invented the motorbike……..no,no,no. There’s a dispute, for eighteen years earlier in 1867 an American, Sylvester Howard Roper invented a two-cylinder steam driven motorcycle. It had a forged-iron and hickory frame and iron shod wooden wheels which must have provided a very uncomfortable ride.  I don’t know how practical this machine was, but suffice to say, it was powered by coal. The firebox and boiler were suspended on springs from the frame between the wheels, so I suppose it was just the job for commuting work on those cold January mornings. Some people consider this to be the first motorcycle. I’m going to leave you to argue amongst yourselves, but just imagine if the idea had caught on; today we be talking about MPS or miles per sack, and Barnsley would be awash with money.

Alas, poor Roper came unstuck. In June of 1896 he took his invention to the Charles River bicycle racetrack in Boston. He had an idea that it would make an ideal pace-making machine for bicycle races. First he completed a few laps while the best bicycle racers tried to keep up with him, then the track was cleared to allow him to show just how potent was his machine. His initial attempt covered a mile in two minutes and 12 seconds for an average speed of about 30 mph.

harley motorcycleBut why stop at that? He knew his bike would perform at an average speed of 40mph as it had done the previous week in unofficial tests. However, as he circled the wooden track and his speed increased, the bike began to wobble causing him to be thrown from the machine. He landing in the sand that surrounded the track, but when worried onlookers reached him, it was clear that he had expired. His death was not a direct result of the accident, but heart failure. The announcement of his death was covered in many newspapers including the Boston Daily Globe.

Early in the 20th century, motorcycles were been offered for sale to the general public. These were very basic, low powered machines, devoid of such luxuries as headlights and gears, but nevertheless, motorcycles, and sales rose year upon year. They were generally started by pedalling,
In 1901, a bicycle racer Oscar Hedstrom designed a motorcycle for the Hendee Manufacturing Company of Springfield, Massachusetts, which later became the Indian Motorcycle Company.

Whilst Daimler and Roper shifted their attention to cars, a certain William Harley and his friends Arthur and Walter Davidson focused very much on motorcycles, and in 1903, three years after the death of Gottlieb Daimler, the Harley-Davidson Motor Company was launched. Their first bike had a well powered engine which could prove itself in races, but the boys had other ideas and launched it as a transport vehicle, the first being sold in Chicago through merchant C.H. Lange.

In the early 20th century and throughout BMW manufactured aircraft engines. In 1923 they launched their first motorcycle, the R32 which reached sales of 3000 in just three years. This machine became the foundation for future models.

However impractical and cumbersome these early attempts, they were the forerunners of today’s machines, and as such we owe a debt of gratitude to men like Roper and Daimler who provided inspiration for inventors that followed. Roper’s steam-powered bicycle still exists in the National Museum of the Smithsonian Institute of American History.
